Storing food safely is Foster’s number one design criteria...achieving that in the most sustainable way is our second.
The reduction in the amount of energy we use will help us meet national and international targets towards lower carbon emissions. This section of the CSR Report explains where Foster has made notable progress both in delivering low energy products and manufacturing in highly energy efficient operations.
There are two key areas in which Foster can help towards minimising its environmental impact:-
These developments have delivered substantial energy related running cost savings and CO2 reductions on Foster products.
Foster has reduced the cost of running a standard 600 litre (21cuft) refrigerator by 70.7% whilst maintaining high performance which is the equivalent of saving 0.88 tonnes of carbon emissions per unit per year (based on 12p per kw/Hr).

Foster are the first and only* commercial refrigeration company to attain the Carbon Trust Standard – awarded to organisations for real carbon reduction. This has been granted to Foster for reducing our carbon footprint over a three year period and committing to further carbon reductions in the years that follow.
The Carbon Trust Standard encourages good practice by companies and organisations in terms of carbon measurement, management and reduction. It is designed to provide a robust objective and consistent methodology for assessing business carbon performance. It is highly valuable to people and organisations wishing to evaluate companies and their environmental credentials.
As part of our ongoing commitment to the environment, Foster has been working on reduction measures throughout its business and manufacturing plants which are outlined in this CSR Report. By achieving the Carbon Trust Standard Foster continues to demonstrate that it remains at the forefront of the industry when it comes to environmental issues.
“Conservation and the environment has always been a major consideration for us at The National Trust. The replacement of all our refrigerated cabinets with new Foster Hydrocarbon cabinets is a way of helping reduce environmental impacts at our sites throughout the UK” - Linda Brewer, Head of Catering Development for the National Trust.
